Spanish Head Coach Bemused by Fer Rugby Announcement but insists focus is on Romania
As Rugby Europe Finals day arrives, Spanish Head Coach Pablo Bourza was unable to hide his disappointment in the result versus Portugal, nor his bemusement at the Spanish Rugby Federation Announcement that followed it. When asked by Spanish Rugby Journalist and commentator and journalist Rodrigo Contreras on the announcement that followed the result, Pablo responded “I don´t understand why (they made the announcement) but my focus is on Romania.
In a bid to soothe any ruffled feathers , Spanish Rugby Vicepresident of Strategy Gabriel Sáez was open with the intention “The idea (of the announcement) was to give calm but we accept the critcism”. However, Sáez was kick to emphasise the postives on and off the field with regards to Spain´s continuing movement of games to bigger but appropriate stadiums. “If we went to Montjuic it would be empty, Malaga are happy to have us . Leganes are happy to have us. There is no magic wand , it´s always about negotiation.”
On the performance versus Portugal, Pablo Bourza expressed his frustation at what could be considered Spain´s first genuinely disappointing result and performance in over a year. “The first 20 minutes we had 70% of the ball and territory but we couldn´t pass the line.” Pablo Bourza was also quick to praise Portugal for their stout defence and performance.
Rugby Europe Finals Day
The result is of course a disappointment to the Spanish Rugby Federation, who as hosts of Rugby Europe Finals Day will be hoping that Spain only competing for the 3rd place versus Romania doesn´t detract from the attendance. Meanwhile, a resurgent Portugal will take on a Georgia mired in a doping scandal whose constant victories in the tournament are predicted to continue.
